About BTT Road & Legal
An independent publication on road safety, commercial transportation and the law that governs them.
What we do
BTT Road & Legal reports and explains how crashes happen, what the research says about them, and how the rules for drivers, carriers and insurers work. We write for people who need the facts straight: reporters on deadline, safety researchers, fleet and safety managers, attorneys and paralegals, drivers, and anyone trying to make sense of a collision after the fact.
Our coverage is organized into six desks:
- Road Safety: human error, distraction, speed, darkness, wildlife and road design, and the people most exposed to them.
- Trucking: driver fatigue, hours of service, maintenance, carrier operations and federal motor carrier rules.
- Accidents: crash causes, the evidence a collision leaves behind and how investigators read it.
- Transportation Law: the regulations that govern motor carriers and the legal concepts that decide who answers for a crash.
- Insurance & Liability: how coverage works, from personal auto policies to federal minimums for carriers.
- Research: statistics, datasets and original analysis, with every figure traced to its source.
How we work
We start from original sources: federal and state datasets, the Code of Federal Regulations, statutes, court opinions and the reports agencies publish. When we cite a number, we say what it measures, where it came from and what it leaves out. When a figure cannot be verified against an original source, we do not publish it.
Legal and regulatory pieces explain how rules and doctrines generally work. They are not advice about any particular situation, and they say so. Our standards are set out in full in the editorial policy, and errors are handled under our corrections policy.
What we are not
BTT Road & Legal is a publication. It is not a law firm, it has no attorney-client relationship with any reader, and nothing on this site is legal advice. We do not evaluate individual cases. If you have been in a crash and need legal help, your state bar association’s lawyer referral service is a good place to start.
Independence
Editors decide what we cover and how. If we publish partner or sponsored material, it is labeled as partner content at the top of the page and kept separate from our reporting. Writers disclose any personal or financial interest in a subject they cover.
